Ragtime, the jaunty, toe-tapping music that captivated American society from the 1890s through World War I, forms the roots of America's popular musical expression. But the understanding of ragtime and its era has been clouded by a history of murky impressions, half-truths, and inventive fictions. Ragtime A Musical and Cultural History cuts through the murkiness. A methodical survey of thousands of rags along with an examination of then-contemporary opinions in magazines and newspapers demonstrate how the music evolved, and how America responded to it.

Ragtime A Musical and Cultural History Edward Berlin 9781504029810 Books Reviews
I have trouble on my mind, so I did not want to lure people into such great distress with the idea that a book describing music would be the key to understanding what is lacking in official behaviors. Institutions which use a cakewalk as a device for recognizing personality have become so dreary that a history of music that includes Remus Takes The Cake (1896) as a march by Jacob Henry Ellis typical of the plantation origin style of a recent spear chucker administration so tone-deaf that mad cow disease was elevated to Secretary of State and half-hearted compromises substituted for real solutions to the people suffering from diet and medical mistreatment at great expense and wheat dementia end of life senior housing subsidy living the guide to people I see now have nothing in common with real excitement.
This is a well-written and researched book about Ragtime Music. I particularly appreciate the time given to the vocal music of the era, since it was the foundation of ragtime we now associate with piano literature. Edward Berlin analyzes several compositions and gives valuable information regarding the elements of what makes a composition a "rag." For those interested in American music of this era, I highly recommend Ragtime A Musical and Cultural History. It is a worthwhile book to add to your collection.
This is perhaps the definitive book written on Ragtime, and is a foundational work with exceptional scholarship. Not only on the important role Ragtime played in the evolution of America music, but also it's profound influence on American culture.
